2010 Legislative Session

The following bills introduced in the current legislative session were authored by J.P. Morrell, LA Senate District 3.

The purpose of these bills is to help communities like Gentilly:

Senate Bill 66

This bill creates a charter school enrollment preference for neighborhood students. Specifically, the bill requires each charter school to establish an enrollment preference for students residing in the immediate neighborhood surrounding the school. Requires that the enrollment of each charter school be composed of a certain percentage of students residing in the immediate neighborhood of the school. Senate Bill 74

This bill provides for the creation of community advisory boards for schools within the Recovery School District. The bill provides relative to the membership, duties and function of such boards; prohibits the State Board of Elementary and Secondary Education from approving a charter school within the district unless the Charter operator has consulted with the community advisor board.

Senate Bill 485

This bill ensures that charter schools comply with state laws related to special education students in the area of data collection behavior and discipline and related services as all other public schools in the state.
